The spectre of IE6 has haunted us for far too long and 2011 was going to be the year it was finally exorcised from the desktop. Has the antiquated and outdated browser finally bitten the dust and who’s the latest contender taking the market by storm.

Internet Explorer 6 is a web browser that has been hampering the progress of web design - for some anyway – for far too long. Totally Communications' Toby Mason was one who felt it should have been put out to pasture "I hope 2011 will spell the end of Internet Explorer 6. IE6 compatibility seriously detracts from what is possible and the hard launch of IE9 should bury it for good. Unfortunately many public sectors are still reliant on it and government cutbacks may yet see IE6 live on."

SO what has IE6 been up to in 2011? As Mason predicted, sadly it is still here and probably will be for a while yet. But the good news is that Microsoft has recognised the browser needs to be killed off. The internet explorer countdown www.ie6countdown.com monitors IE6 usage across the world with the aim of getting the figure below 1%. Figures from the site show that 2011 saw a drop from around 12% to 8%. Who are the biggest culprits? The Peoples Republic of China; the country has IE6 usage of around 27%.

What has come as more of a surprise is Chrome's rise and Firefox’s slow decline in the worldwide browser market. Chrome overtook Firefox for the first time in November 2011 and Internet Explorer even saw a very slight upturn.
